Salon Sales Commission: Pay on Money Collected, Not Billed

Why Salon Sales Commission Should Follow Money Collected: Discounts, Unpaid Balances and Instalments

Should salon sales commission follow the bill or the money received? How to set the commission base for discounts, unpaid balances, instalments and Atome.

Base sales commission on the money your salon has actually collected, not on the list price or the bill. When a package is discounted, the base is what the customer actually paid. When part of the bill is still unpaid, commission on that part waits until the money arrives. When the customer pays in instalments, commission follows each payment. When the customer pays with Atome, the base is what the salon receives after the platform’s fee. MyBMS Pro calculates sales commission in tiers on the total actually collected and records the amount received from Atome after fees as the commission base.

Why paying commission on the bill hurts your cash flow

Take Lina, a consultant at your salon. She sells a body treatment package and the customer pays a deposit, promising to settle the rest next month. If commission is calculated on the full bill, Lina’s commission for the whole package is paid this month.

Now two things can go wrong. The customer may pay late, or not pay the rest at all. Either way, the salon has paid commission out of money it never received. Over many packages, that becomes a real cash flow problem, and a hard conversation when you try to take commission back.

Signs your commission base is the bill, not the money:

  • Commission is paid before the customer finishes paying. The salon funds the gap.
  • Big discounts still earn full commission. Staff have no reason to protect the price.
  • Unpaid balances are nobody’s problem. Once the commission is paid, nobody follows up.
  • Payday starts arguments. Staff and managers count different numbers.

I often tell owners that commission should follow the money that has actually come in. Record what the customer has not paid as an outstanding balance and pay commission when it arrives, so commission never drains the salon’s cash flow.

Four situations, and the commission base for each

Diagram of the sales commission base in four situations: discounted package, unpaid balance, instalments and Atome, all based on money actually collected

1. Discounted packages: count what the customer actually paid

If a package is sold below its list price, the sales commission base is the price the customer actually paid. This keeps the incentive honest: a consultant who protects the price earns more than one who discounts to close quickly.

2. Unpaid balances: commission waits for the money

When a customer pays part now and owes the rest, count only the part collected. The unpaid part is tracked as an outstanding balance and counts once it is paid. This also gives the seller a reason to help the salon collect it. See how to keep package balances and outstanding amounts visible.

3. Instalments paid to the salon: commission follows each payment

If the customer pays the salon in several parts, each payment counts towards sales commission when it is received. Commission never runs ahead of the money.

4. Atome and other buy-now-pay-later payments: count what the salon receives

With Atome, the salon receives the payment from the platform after its fee. Count that amount, not the bill amount. Read more in paying commission with Atome in a salon POS.

Sales commission and hands-on commission use different bases

Everything above is about sales commission, which rewards the person who sells. Hands-on commission rewards the therapist who performs the service, and it is counted when a package session or service is redeemed, not when money is collected.

Keeping the two apart avoids a common unfairness: a therapist should not lose hands-on commission because the customer has not finished paying the person who sold the package. For how this works when two staff share one package, read one package sold by one staff and redeemed by another.

How to explain the rule to your team

  • Write it in one sentence. For example: “Sales commission is calculated on money the salon has actually received.”
  • Explain it before the month starts. Changing the base in the middle of a month feels like a pay cut, even when it is fair.
  • Let staff see their collected total. People trust a rule when they can check the number themselves.
  • Treat unpaid balances as a team job. If commission waits for the money, the seller has a reason to help collect it.

How MyBMS Pro calculates commission on money collected

MyBMS Pro is an AI-driven, next-generation SaaS management hub specifically designed for multi-branch beauty salons. For sales commission on collected payments, these features work together:

Diagram of how MyBMS Pro bases commission on money collected: payment received with Atome counted after the platform fee, unpaid amount tracked as an outstanding balance, sales commission tiered on the total actually collected, and hands-on commission when a session is redeemed
  • Two-track tiered commission engine. Sales commission is calculated in tiers on the total amount actually collected. Hands-on commission is counted separately when a package session or service is redeemed.
  • Package and outstanding balance tracking. Each package shows remaining sessions, history and any outstanding balance.
  • Atome and other buy-now-pay-later payments. The system records the amount actually received after the platform’s fee and uses it as the base for sales commission.
  • AI business dashboard. Owners can see outstanding balance details alongside daily traffic, sales trends and target achievement.

FAQ

Should salon sales commission be based on sales or on money collected?

On money collected. Paying commission on the bill means the salon may pay commission on money it never receives.

How is commission calculated on a discounted package?

Use the price the customer actually paid after the discount as the base for sales commission, not the list price.

A customer paid a deposit and still owes the rest. When is commission paid?

Count the deposit now and the rest when it is collected. The unpaid part stays as an outstanding balance until then.

How is sales commission calculated when a customer pays with Atome?

Use the amount the salon actually receives after the platform’s fee as the base, not the bill amount.

Is there a MyBMS Pro mobile app?

No. MyBMS Pro is a web-based system used in the browser.
