Before your salon buys an expensive beauty machine, check four numbers: how many sessions you can realistically fill each week, the price customers will actually pay per session, what each session costs you besides the machine, and how many sessions it takes to break even compared with the machine’s working life. If the sessions needed to break even are more than you can realistically fill, the machine is a risk, however good the sales pitch sounds. After you buy, MyBMS Pro tracks the machine’s cost per use, true margin and payback progress so you can see whether your estimates were right.
Why machine purchases go wrong
A supplier demonstration usually shows the machine at its best: full schedules, list prices and happy customers. The decision is then made on excitement, and the questions come later.
The common mistakes are easy to recognise:
- Planning on a full calendar. The machine can do many sessions a day, but your salon can only fill the slots it has customers, rooms and therapists for.
- Counting the list price. Most treatments are sold in packages, often with a discount, and some are paid with Atome or in parts.
- Forgetting the cost of each session. Gels, probes, serums and the therapist’s hands-on commission all come out of every session.
- Counting package sales as earnings. A package sold is a service the salon still owes until each session is done.
How many sessions a machine can do in a day is the supplier’s number. How many your booking calendar can actually fill is yours. Open your own calendar and do the sums before you sign.

The four numbers to check before you buy

1. Sessions you can realistically fill each week
Start from your own customers, not the supplier’s estimate. How many existing customers would want this treatment? Do you have a room and a trained therapist free at the times they can come? Look at your current booking calendar and daily customer traffic. The answer is usually far lower than the machine’s maximum capacity, and that is the number to plan with.
2. The real price per session
Work out what the salon will actually receive for one session. If you plan to sell it in packages, divide the package price the customer actually pays by the number of sessions, after any discount. If customers will pay with Atome, use the amount the salon receives after the platform’s fee.
3. What each session costs you, besides the machine
List the consumables each treatment uses and the hands-on commission the therapist earns for doing it. These costs come with every single session, so a small amount per session matters. Read how a treatment BOM deducts consumables from stock.
4. Sessions needed to break even, and the machine’s working life
Subtract number 3 from number 2 to get the margin each session leaves before the machine. Then divide the machine’s purchase cost by that margin. This is how many sessions the machine must perform to pay for itself. Divide it by number 1 to see how many weeks that takes, and compare it with how long you expect the machine to keep working and stay in demand.
If the break-even point is further away than the machine’s working life, or than customer interest in the treatment, think again before you sign.
Questions to ask yourself before signing
- Who will do the treatment? If only one therapist is trained, the machine stops when that therapist is on leave.
- Which customers will buy it first? Name the customer groups, not “everyone”.
- Will it replace a treatment you already sell? If customers simply switch, the new revenue is smaller than it looks.
- What will you check after the first months? Decide now which numbers will tell you it is working.
After you buy: compare your estimate with the real numbers
The four numbers above are estimates. Once the machine is in use, replace them with real data: actual sessions per week, actual price received, actual consumables used and actual payback progress. Our guide to beauty machine ROI explains how to track this every month.
Watch unredeemed sessions too. Sessions sold in packages but not yet done are a service the salon still owes. See how to keep remaining sessions and outstanding balances visible.
How MyBMS Pro helps you see whether a machine pays for itself
MyBMS Pro is an AI-driven, next-generation SaaS management hub specifically designed for multi-branch beauty salons. Once a machine is in use, these features show whether your purchase estimate was right:

- Machine ROI tracking. Calculates the depreciation cost of each use and the true margin of each session. The dashboard shows payback progress and cumulative revenue for each machine.
- BOM double deduction. When a bill is closed or a package session is redeemed, the session and the in-salon consumables are deducted together, so consumable cost is not forgotten.
- Package tracking. Remaining sessions, history and outstanding balances for every package, redeemed at your branch or another branch.
- Two-track commission. Hands-on commission is counted when a session is redeemed. With Atome, the amount received after fees is recorded as the sales commission base.
- AI business dashboard. Daily customer traffic and sales trends help you judge demand before the next purchase.

FAQ
How do I know if my salon should buy a new beauty machine?
Estimate the sessions you can realistically fill each week and the sessions needed to break even. If you cannot reach break-even well within the machine’s working life, the purchase is a risk.
How do I calculate how many sessions a beauty machine needs to break even?
Take the real price per session, subtract consumables and hands-on commission, then divide the machine’s purchase cost by what is left.
Should I use the supplier’s estimate of sessions per day?
Use it only as the upper limit. Plan with the sessions your own customers, rooms and therapists can actually fill.
Does MyBMS Pro tell me whether to buy a machine?
No. The decision is yours. Once the machine is in use, MyBMS Pro tracks its cost per use, true margin and payback progress so you can check your estimate.
Is there a MyBMS Pro mobile app?
No. MyBMS Pro is a web-based system used in the browser.
